How To Wash Indigo Dye Uniform |
Good quality Kendogi and Hakama have dye running constantly. The better the material the longer the dye will run. The traditional indigo dye is anti-bacteria, prevent smell and makes the Gi strong and lasting. Therefore Kendokas must take care when washing these equipments.
KENDOGI If you prefer the dye to run longer then after training only gently hand wash the Gi (may use soap if preferred). Quickly dry by hanging (DO NOT PLACE UNDER THE SUN OR USE MACHINE/DRYER, otherwise it will ruin the dye).
HAKAMA Hakama should be washed while it’s folded properly (seek advise from your sensei or senior in how to fold the hakama properly). Press the well-folded hakama under the mixture of a pail water and about 550ml (2.3 cup) vinegar, then take it out unfolded with all the pleats in place and press the water out without ruining the shape of the Hakama. Finally hang it upside down to dry with all the pleats in place. When Hakama dries fold it properly, put balanced pressure on it so the pleats are well defined. (DO NOT PLACE UNDER THE SUN OR USE MACHINE/DRYER, otherwise it will ruin the dye).
